Signs of a Pet Emergency

It's important to be aware of the signs that indicate your pet may be experiencing a medical emergency. These signs may include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Severe bleeding
  • Unconsciousness
  • Ingestion of toxic substances
  • Severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • Inability to urinate
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Extreme lethargy
  • Trauma or injury

If you notice any of these signs in your pet, it's important to seek emergency vet care immediately.

Steps to Take in a Pet Emergency

In the event of a pet emergency, it's important to remain calm and take the following steps:

  • Contact your veterinarian: If we are open, call us immediately and inform us of the situation. We will advise if you need to bring your pet in for emergency care or if we need to refer you to another emergency animal hospital better equipped to handle your pet’s needs. If we are closed, please refer to our after-hours emergency care list.

  • Transport your pet safely: If your pet is able to walk or be carried, transport them to the vet clinic as quickly and safely as possible. If your pet is unable to move, use a blanket or towel to carefully move them to your vehicle.

  • Provide first aid: If your pet is experiencing severe bleeding, you can apply pressure to the wound with a clean cloth or bandage. If your pet is choking, you can try to remove the object from their mouth with your fingers or a pair of tweezers. However, be careful not to push the object further down their throat.

  • Remain calm and comfort your pet: Your pet may be scared and in pain, so it's important to remain calm and provide comfort and reassurance. This will also help to keep your pet calm and prevent them from further injuring themselves.

Poison Control

If you think your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, please call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC)* at 888-426-4435 right away. The APCC is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You may also contact the Pet Poison Helpline* at 855-764-7661.

* A consultation fee may apply.
